Elmo
(c. 1190–1246)
   Saint and Missionary.
   Elmo was born Peter González in Castile, Spain. A nephew of the Bishop of Astorga, he rejected worldly preferment and joined the Dominican Order. He served as chaplain to King Ferdinand III in his crusade against the Moors, but subsequently concentrated on preaching the gospel to the poor sailors of Spain and Portugal. He became their patron saint and when an electrical flash is seen on board ship, it is frequently described as ‘St Elmo’s fire’.
